The Guzman family recently received the keys to their Habitat home and got a first look at their newly finished home. Located in the City of Jurupa Valley, which has four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a backyard with fruit trees, and a pre-irrigated section for a garden. Isaura, a single mother, works two jobs. Her oldest son currently attends the Art Institute and her oldest daughter just finished her freshman year at UC Davis. The youngest daughter and son are attending high school.
All five family members paid $950 plus utilities to live in an unpermitted converted garage where the four bedrooms weren’t larger than a closet. When it rained, water leaked through the light fixtures in the ceiling.
Isaura was able to afford her home purchase through Habitat Riverside because of the Economic Development Agency’s Neighborhood Stabilization Program. This program funded the purchase of 17 bank-owned, foreclosed homes in Rubidoux with the intent to rehabilitate the home and sell them to very low income families with a 0% interest mortgage.
