From dawn until dusk, the neighbors worked together to create this beautiful depiction of Jurupa Valley.
Habitat for Humanity Riverside’s Neighborhood Revitalization program responds to community aspirations with an array of products, services, and partnerships to empower residents to revive their neighborhood and enhance their quality of life. Habitat for Humanity Riverside acts as a catalyst, promoting networks and common interest among the community based on agreed upon goals. Residents agreed they wanted a project that would slow down traffic as well as unite the neighborhood. On May 1st, we received enormous support from the city of Jurupa Valley for its first Painted Intersections project in the Demeter Place and Razor Way neighborhoods. Residents and volunteers painted a mural designed by community representative and artist, Christine Chavez, onto the intersections of Demeter and 28th street.
During neighborhood meetings, City of Jurupa Valley’s Mayor, Laura Roughton, approached neighbors with the idea of a Painted Intersection Project and the neighborhood was very welcoming of the idea. They held a contest, with the theme “The Beauty in Jurupa Valley” to choose artwork for the project.
The contest winner, Christine Chavez is an aspiring graphic designer and believes the beauty of Jurupa Valley is found in it’s agriculture. She depicted this theme using Mt. Rubidoux as it’s main setting.
This event was a grand celebration for everyone in the community!
Neighborhood Revitalization serves families by responding to community aspirations with an expanded array of products, services, and partnerships to empower residents to revive their neighborhoods and enhance their quality of life.
Special thanks to Southwest Site Services for providing a portable restroom for the event!
My husband and I enjoyed the sense of community as we shared in this project with many people whom we’d never met: Now I feel a part of that neighborhood. Participating in art is like preparing a meal: It is an opportunity to be close to others, observe how they think and talk about anything while working toward a common goal: leaving a lovely marker in their neighborhood that reminds them of that day and the people whose company they enjoyed.
That is exactly what Neighborhood Revitalization is all about. Thank you Karen for you and your husband’s participation in this amazing event!
