Dixie has lived in her home for over 25 years. She is elderly and has limited mobility; she often gets help from her neighbors to complete necessary tasks. The exterior of her home had started to deteriorate and she was physically and financially unable to maintain it.
On January 23rd, teams from Eden Lutheran Church, UCR Gamma Beta Phi, UCR Habitat Chapter, and UCR Sigma Pi Alpha worked together to preserve Dixie’s home at the Edgelane Mobile Home Park in Moreno Valley. Almost all of the volunteers have worked on an ABWK site before and were very familiar with how the project proceeds.
Volunteers first cleaned and prepped the home for painting. Then, after suiting up with supplies, they got right to work!
Several areas of the trim and window frames had deteriorated wood that needed to be replaced. Volunteers worked with our project coordinator to measure, cut, and replace the old wood. Ana, a volunteer on this particular job stated “I love that I’m learning so many different skills such as painting and using tools”.
Dixie was extremely impressed that the group was comprised of so many young people. “The best part is seeing all those kids work so hard.”
These groups truly did an amazing job. Thank you.
Habitat for Humanity Riverside’s A Brush with Kindness program is an exterior home preservation program providing painting, landscaping, and minor repair services. The program focuses on assisting low-income homeowners impacted by age, disability or family circumstances who are struggling to maintain the exterior of their homes. Our amazing volunteers are the key to our ability to provide these services in our local communities.
