9/20/12: Sleep Train Volunteers

A big thank you goes out to the volunteer group from Sleep Train who came out to paint with us. They painted the home of seniors, Consuelo and Angel, who live in the Corona Palms mobile home park.  They purchased the home about 18 months ago and cannot afford to paint it because Social Security is now their only source of income.  And they don’t move or paint like they used to when they were younger!  Their mobile home was a lovely mint green which definitely dates it. It was pretty faded and ready for sprucing up to keep in line with park rules.

The group from Sleep Train was using this event as a management meeting so they started later in the day than we normally do. We got a bit of a head start with a couple of regular volunteers working on their sweat equity. They were able to paint one wall and took care of the two peaks that are a  little difficult to access. Just as we were finishing up these areas the big group of volunteers arrived and got ready to  paint.  Most of the volunteers  had never painted before so some painting 101 education was needed throughout the day.  Apparently T, the group’s manager had surprised his group with the painting opportunity so not everyone was dressed or quite prepared for the task at hand but it worked out.  Consuelo and Angel watched us paint their home and couldn’t believe how fast the work was completed. Consuelo loved the colors and the new look of the home.

The heat of the day started to wear on the group since it was near or just over 100 degrees again.  Lots of water and Gatorade did help to keep the group going. They finished almost all of the home except for a few areas of  trim and touch up which was completed by a couple of extra volunteers the following day.

Sleep Train, thanks again for the help completing this project. We all slept better knowing that we helped Consuelo and Angel.
